I love details … especially when it comes to paper and parties! A stunning piece of paper, gorgeous typestyle, the perfect pantone color and a great patterned envelope liner all make my heart swoon. I love the first impression that an invitation makes for a party and take great joy, pride and responsibility in creating the perfect custom piece. Big bows from beautiful ribbon, personalized drink tags, enticing menus, inviting place cards, sparkling cake toppers and oh-so-much more. So you can imagine the joy that I feel each day at since openning my own boutique stationery studio a year ago. We treat each party like a new “brand” and create a theme that is incorporated from the invitation to the way their guest is impressed that every detail was well thought of and uniquely custom created.
Although I feel that I was born to love this industry, it was my first job at Dream Baskets (in my hometown of Harrisburg, Illinois) that I realized that I wanted to make this dream a career. I learned how to create window and store displays, custom gift wrap, visited trade shows and learned about how to run a small business. From there, I have been incredibly blessed throughout my career by working with some of the most amazing brands who have encouraged me and help lead me to follow my dreams. From the marketing department of art licensing legend Mary Englebreit, to operations and design for imprintable company Julia D. Azar, to marketing, trade shows and starting the personalized stationery division for Lifeguard Press (licensors of ah-mazing brands like Lilly Pulitzer, Jonathan Adler and Dylan’s Candy Bar). I almost pinch myself for the opportunities to work with such stellar companies! I continue to enjoy working with Lifeguard Press on public relations and creating award-winning showrooms and trade show booths. (Just celebrated designing and merchandisng my 50th booth this past January!)
Because I love what I do, and I truly believe that “to whom much is given, much is required,” I feel it is my responsibility and honor to share that passion through consulting. I find great fulfillment in helping others who are new to the stationery industry whether it be launching boutique stationery stores, developing strategies for designs or encouraging companies to define their brand and future. This year, I am honored to be a mentor for new exhibitors at the National Stationery Show and host the Stationery Academy with Whitney English Kolb.
I love living my dream … and love living in Memphis being a true southern girl! After all, this is where I met my dream guy and husband. (And, in case you were wondering, yes, he’s Chinese! Thus my last name… and the recurring head tilts and “can you spell that please” that I often get.) He encourages and supports my passion for stationery, lets me be a work-a-holic when I need to be and knows how to help me find balance. I knew we were the perfect match when I realized that he loved dinner parties as much as I do, wears a bow tie with his suits, and lets me buy all the cake plates I want!
So, cue the confetti … let’s throw a party!
